The Adventures Of Lady Susan Bird

Lady Susan Bird is a special ladybird who likes to have adventures and to meet people.

One day Lady Susan was sitting on a leaf.
She said "Today I will have an adventure".

Lady Susan flew away to find an adventure.
"Maybe there will be something interesting to see" she said.

Lady Susan flew along and saw a big sheep.
Lady Susan decided to visit the sheep.
"I will sit on the sheep's nose" she thought.

Lady Susan noticed the sheep's eyes were shut.
"Are you asleep sheep?" asked Lady Susan.

The sheep said "I am asleep but now I am not a sheep".
"Oops", said the sheep.
"I meant I am a sheep but now I am not asleep".

Why are you sitting on my nose?" asked the sheep.
"I wanted to talk to you" said Lady Susan.
"What is your name?"

But before the sheep could answer his nose twitched and then
"Achoooooooo" went the sheep. "Help" shouted Lady Susan. But there was nobody to help.

Lady Susan was blown round and round and round and round,
shouting "Help", then she landed on something nice and soft.

"Ooooooof, what happended? Where am I?" said Lady Susan,
but there was nobody to tell her.

Lady Susan was on her back, so she wriggled one way,
then she wriggled the other way, trying to turn the right way up.

With a very big wriggle she turned the right way up.
Now she could see where she was. "That was a surpise, I have landed on a mushroom".

As she looked around she saw a very big black bird flying towards her. "Oh dear, I think I am going to have another adventure. I wonder if that big black bird is hungry" said Lady Susan.

"Hello big black bird" said Lady Susan, in a very nervous sort of voice. "Hello ladybird, what is your name?" said the big black bird.

"My name is Lady Susan Bird", said Lady Susan,
feeling even more nervous.

"I am sorry, but I have to go somewhere else now" said Lady Susan, looking at the big black bird to see if he was hungry.

So Lady Susan flew off quickly. "Very odd, as soon as she arrives she goes again" said the big black bird. "I did not have the time to tell her my name".

Lady Susan flew on and saw a strange person standing in a cornfield. "I wonder who that is. I think I will go closer and talk to that person", said Lady Susan.

"Hello, what is your name?" asked Lady Susan.
There was no answer, so Lady Susan decided to fly round again.

Again she said "Hello, what is your name?" There was no answer.
"I will go and sit on the person's arm. Perhaps that person is asleep like the sheep" she thought.

So Lady Susan sat on the arm. Then can you guess what she saw?" "Hello Lady Susan" said the big black bird. "Do not worry, I am not hungry. I will not try to eat you" said the big black bird.

"I am very happy to hear that" said Lady Susan. "Do you know who this person is? I have asked but got no answer", said Lady Susan.

The big black bird moved closer and said "This is not a person, it is a scarecrow. It is to frighten away birds so they do not eat the farmer's wheat. But I am a crow and it does not scare me at all".

"I have to go now" said Lady Susan. "Goodbye" said the big black crow. "I am glad the big black crow was not hungry" said Lady Susan, as she flew along.

Lady Susan flew on until she saw her favourite place. "I have had lots of adventures today" she said.

"It has been very exciting today, but I am tired and it is time to have a sleep",said Lady Susan.

So Lady Susan crawled under some grass and went to sleep.

One day Lady Susan was sitting on a leaf.
She said "I will go for a walk".

Lady Susan walked down the leaf.
"Maybe there will be someone to talk to" she said.

Lady Susan was walking up another leaf
and saw a yellow beetle.

"Hello" said Lady Susan. "You are yellow
and I am red, but I think you are my cousin."

"Yes, I am your cousin. Some ladybirds are
yellow", said the yellow beetle.

"It is nice to meet a cousin" said Lady Susan.
"I am happy to meet you too" said the yellow beetle.

Lady Susan decided to fly to another leaf.
"Goodbye" said the yellow beetle. "Goodbye" said Lady Susan.

Lady Susan was flying and saw a red beetle.

"Hello" said Lady Susan. "You have stripes and I
have spots, but I think you are my cousin".

"Yes, I am your cousin. Some ladybirds have
stripes" said the beetle with stripes.

"Its nice to meet a cousin" said Lady Susan.
"I am pleased to meet you too", said the beetle with stripes."

Lady Susan said "I will go a bit further now. Goodbye".
"Goodbye" said the beetle with stripes.

Lady Susan saw a red beetle. "I wonder if that is
another cousin", said Lady Susan.

"You are red and I am red. Are you one
of my cousins?" asked Lady Susan.

"No, I am not one of your cousins. I am a
cardinal beetle", said the red beetle."

"It is nice to meet you even if you are not
one of my cousins", said Lady Susan.

It was nice to meet you too", said the cardinal beetle.
"I will go back now" said Lady Susan.

"Goodbye" said the cardinal beetle.
"Goodbye" said Lady Susan.

"It has been an interesting day" said Lady Susan.

"I am very tired. I will sleep now" said Lady Susan.

So she did.

Wildlife Alphabet

All the pictures are of wildlife found in Kent. Some letters of the alphabet have many things that could be listed, but X and Z were difficult to find. Xanthoria parietina is a lichen found in many places. Zerna Erecta, also known as Bromus Erectus or Upright Brome is a grass. Both are found in Kent.

Although we tried to avoid obscure wildlife or difficult names our only alternative to Zerna Erecta seemed to be Zoologist or Zebra. Of course zoologists are found in Kent, unlike Zebras, but we decided to stick with Zerna Erecta.
