Survey of Members' Interests

KLAW conducted a survey of members' interests in January 2024. The response rate was over 85%, with many useful and thoughtful response. Common interests have been identified to support KLAW planning, including at the AGM.

Highlights From The 2024 Survey


Overall Priorities:

  • Large majority are interested in a diversity of habitats.
  • A sizeable minority are also interested in habitats for single species.

Advice And Guidance From Other KLAW Members:

  • Pond creation.
  • Woodland regeneration and planting or management.
  • Funding.

Surveys of wildlife and plants:

  • A large majority have had a survey [of wildlife or plants] done.
  • Mix of self-survey and external expert survey.
  • Many have doubts about their expertise to do a survey.

Identification Apps:

  • Commonly used by members.
  • Most popular: Merlin and iNaturalist.
  • Some reservations about the accuracy of the results using the Apps.
  • Many use an App but follow up with hardcopy identification.
  • Conclusion: “use with caution”.

Funding Sources:

  • About half of the membership are entirely self-funded.
  • Grants / other funding is of interest.
  • There is uncertainty about what is available or who is eligible for grants.
  • There are some concerns about grants being paid retrospectively.
  • More information on grants will be welcome.

Livestock:

  • Small majority have previously had, or currently have, livestock.

Attending And Hosting KLAW Events:

  • Majority have attended KLAW events and have positive views on them.
  • The majority plan to host an event or help another member host an event.
  • Constraints are time available to organise, access and parking.
  • Also some concerns about what will be expected and how many might attend.
  • About a 1/3 of members are unable to host events.

Volunteers Identified For KLAW Events:

  • Soil health day.
  • Nature friendly farming.
  • Repeat visit to Hambrook Marshes.
  • Bat identification evening.
  • Bumble bee conservation.
  • AGM 2025 at Langdon Court.

Activities Identified By The Survey

  • Meadow management / Visits to KLAW members’ meadows.
  • KLAW to seek an expert on Meadow Management to attend a KLAW Event.

Q & A From The 2024 Survey

1. Are there any leaflets giving general advice on managing land for wildlife?

The KWT leaflet “Managing Land for a Wilder Kent” gives advice on a wide range of topics of interest to KLAW members, click here for a copy.


2. What is required when hosting a KLAW Event?

There are no fixed rules for hosting. It's up to the host to decide…… But experience with earlier events has helped develop a list of things that can be considered.

  1. Would you find it helpful to talk to someone who has previously hosted an event?
  2. Is this a public event that you are inviting KLAW members to?
  3. If this is a public event will you be charging an entry fee?
  4. If you will charge, what will the charge be?
  5. Do you wish to or have to impose a limit on the number of attendees?
  6. Can you provide car parking near your landholding or can you direct people to somewhere nearby?
  7. Will there be a charge for parking?
  8. Are dogs welcome?
  9. If dogs are welcome, should they be kept on a lead?
  10. Is the landholding and event suitable for small children?
  11. Is the location easily accessible: is it steep / lots of steps / slippery or difficult to walk across?
  12. Have you any other health and safety worries that are a barrier to people attending?
  13. Should members bring their own food / drink?
  14. Will you provide anything to eat or drink?
  15. If the weather is bad, e.g. rain, snow, high winds etc., will you have to cancel or postpone?
  16. If you have to cancel or postpone how and when will you contact those who want to attend?
  17. Can you send the KLAW Secretary details for an announcement to go to the KLAW membership
  18. Are you in the new KLAW Whats App group and will that be useful for an announcement?
  19. Will you be able to produce a short write up / photos of the event after it has ended, for the KLAW website?

3. What is required for helping a host?

Many KLAW members are happy to help another member host an event, even if they are unable to host themselves. Things that you might be able to help with:

  1. Providing specialist expertise for the topic of the event.
  2. Greeting people on arrival.
  3. Explaining how to reach the location of the event. (e.g. when the arrival point is at a distance from the location of the event).
  4. Producing or printing supporting information:photos, maps, general handouts etc, for distribution before or during the event.
  5. Volunteering to car share with attendees who live near you, especially if the event is located a long way from the home location.
  6. Providing chairs /food/specialist equipment etc.
  7. Keeping track of any questions not answered during the event, for a follow up.
  8. Producing or helping to produce a report of the event (or photos) for adding to the KLAW website.

4. How to find out more about managing land for biodiversity / range of habitats?

  1. Suggested reading: Rewilding books such as The Book of Wilding.
  2. Visit other members’ landholdings and meet kindred spirits.

5. How to find out about habitats for specific species?

  1. When members offer visits map your interest to what the hosting member has to show you.
  2. KLAW will try to cross-reference known interests with known local expertise, e.g. on specific species or habitat needs.

6. How to improve understanding of meadow creation and management?

  1. KLAW will ask a local expert to attend an appropriate event, where possible.
  2. It is suggested you attend appropriate KLAW events and look for similar events, uch as Natural England's events, to attend.
  3. KLAW will collate information on meadow creation and management over time and add this to this web site.
  4. Check the details of KLAW Landholder members and KLAW past events to see what informaiton can be obtained from other members.

7. How do we create a wildlife pond?

  1. Visit existing ponds built by KLAW members.
  2. KLAW is building in references to pond visits into all KLAW events where a member has a pond so that over time a diversity of pond types can be looked at.
  3. The Freshwater Habitats Trust has some very useful resources. Click here to find more information.
  4. KLAW will also seek a pond creation and pond management expert who might be able to attend an event.

8. Is there advice on woodland regeneration and planting or management?

  1. The Forestry Commission event at Tway Wood on 11/3/2024. This event is described under the Activities - Events and Meetings tab.
  2. The event was followed up by the Forestry Commission providing a rnge of useful links to supporting information. Click here to see the links provided by the Forestry Commission.
  3. If there is continuing interest KLAW will consider holding a similar event.

9. Surveys (of wildlife – not of KLAW members), use of identification apps and advice on wildlife recording

  1. Survey results where identification and recording apps are referred to are at the top of this page.
  2. KLAW is adding to the Research, whenever information on the use of survey apps is sent in by members. This covers members experience of Apps and the members' assessment of their usefulness.
  3. Sound recording, for example of bird song, is a specialist subject. Several bird song recordings provided by KLAW members are included in the KLAW web page Audios.
  4. KLAW is also building a list of useful reference resources, e.g. one member reported that "NHBS.com is a very good commercial resource”.

10. Advice On Sources Of Funding

  1. KLAW is keeping track of sources of funding and some information is provided on Grants. This includes a link to information provided by the Forestry Commission. The information will be updated whenever additional information is identified.

11. Hedgerows and hedgerow management

  1. A Hedge laying session by KLAW member has been repeated by polular demand. Click on Hedgelaying Course for more details.
  2. KLAW will send out a message to all members when another relevant KLAW event is to be held or if KLAW members are able to attend another organisation's event on hedges and hedgelaying.
  3. Details of the member that gave the Hedgewaying course are provided in the Events record.

12. What KLAW events are planned for this year?

  1. KLAW is Keeping a record of volunteers to host events or to help host events, details of planned events are recorded in the monthly management meeting minutes.
  2. The minutes also record details of any commercial events that might be of interest to KLAW members. The minutes can be found by clicking on Minutes.
  3. The KLAW consitution does not allow fill scale adverts for commercial events on this web pages but may include links out to online adverts.
  4. Where possible KLAW will in future help with car sharing / pooling for attending events.
